”One of these rules concerns starting and ending a letter. If you begin with a title followed by a family name (e.g. Mrs Jenkins) then you should end your correspondence ‘Yours sincerely’; if you do not know the name of the person you are writing to (e.g. Dear Editor, Dear Sir or Madam) the salutation should be ‘Yours faithfully’. Finally, ‘Dear Anne ‘ etc should end with ‘Kind regards’. There are variations to this e.g. ‘Best regards’ or simply ‘Regards’ but in my view they are vulgar when used for professional purposes as would be ‘hi’ or ‘hello’ from an associate to a client.”
